Learn Chinese: Months & Seasons
Learning to navigate time is a fundamental step in mastering Chinese conversation. This lesson focuses on the months of the year, the four seasons, and essential terms for discussing the calendar. These words are vital for making plans, describing the weather, and understanding the passage of time in a daily context.
One of the most helpful patterns in Chinese is the logical structure of the months. Unlike English, which uses unique names like "January" or "October," Chinese simply combines a number from one to twelve with the word for month, yuè. For example, January is yīyuè (one month) and December is shí'èryuè (twelve month). This numerical system makes the calendar very easy to learn. Similarly, the four seasons share a common suffix, tiān, as seen in chūntiān (Spring) and xiàtiān (Summer).
When talking about relative time, you will notice different patterns for months and years. To describe months, you use the markers shàng ge yuè for last month and xià ge yuè for next month. However, years use specific prefixes like qùnián (last year) and míngnián (next year). Mastering these building blocks allows you to clearly communicate a specific rìqī (date) or talk about your schedule in terms of general shíjiān (time).
