Learn Finnish: Numbers 1–20
Mastering numbers is a fundamental step in learning Finnish, as they appear in everything from telling time to handling money at the market. This lesson covers the essential building blocks from one (yksi) to twenty (kaksikymmentä), providing the foundation you need for more complex counting and daily interactions. Finnish numbers follow a very logical and predictable structure once you understand a few key linguistic patterns.
For the numbers eleven through nineteen, Finnish uses a consistent system by adding the suffix -toista to the base digit. For example, eleven is yksitoista and fourteen is neljätoista. Historically, this suffix refers to the number being part of the "second" set of ten. This regularity makes the Finnish "teens" much simpler to learn than their English equivalents, as there are no irregular forms to memorize. When you reach twenty (kaksikymmentä), the logic shifts slightly to a compound of kaksi and a form of kymmenen, which sets the stage for all higher multiples.
As you practice, focus on the consistent stress Finnish places on the first syllable of every word. Whether you are saying a short word like kuusi (six) or a longer one like kahdeksan (eight), the emphasis remains at the beginning. Recognizing these rhythmic patterns will help you speak more clearly and understand native speakers more easily as they count or share phone numbers and prices.
