Learn German: Numbers 1–20

Mastering the numbers from one to twenty is a fundamental step in learning German. This vocabulary set forms the backbone of daily communication, allowing you to handle essential tasks such as telling the time, paying for groceries, or sharing your phone number. Whether you are ordering a coffee or navigating public transport, these twenty words will appear in almost every conversation you have. These basic digits provide the building blocks for all higher numbers and complex mathematical expressions you will encounter later in your studies.

As you progress through the list, you will notice a helpful linguistic pattern for the numbers thirteen through nineteen. Much like the English suffix "teen," German combines the base number with Zehn ([tseːn]), which means ten. For example, the number thirteen is Dreizehn ([ˈdraɪˌtseːn]), literally translating to "three-ten." However, pay close attention to slight variations in spelling and pronunciation for sixteen and seventeen. Instead of using the full word Sechs, the number sixteen becomes Sechzehn ([ˈzɛçˌtseːn]), dropping the final "s" from the root. Similarly, the number seven, Sieben, shortens its ending to become Siebzehn ([ˈziːpˌtseːn]) for seventeen.

While the numbers one through twelve, such as Eins ([aɪns]) and Elf ([ɛlf]), must be memorized individually, understanding these logical building blocks makes it much easier to tackle larger figures. By the time you reach Zwanzig ([ˈtsvantsɪç]), or twenty, you will have established a solid foundation for counting and numerical logic in the German language.
