Learn Japanese: Shapes
This lesson introduces the essential vocabulary for describing shapes and geometric forms in Japanese. Understanding these terms is crucial for everything from navigating city streets and following diagrams to discussing design, art, and architecture. You will learn basic two-dimensional shapes such as En (circle) and Seihōkei (square), as well as three-dimensional forms like Kyū (sphere) and Rippōtai (cube).
One of the most helpful patterns to notice in this list is the systematic way Japanese names polygons. Most of these words combine a number with the suffix -kakukei, which literally means "angle shape." For example, Sankakukei (triangle) uses the number three, while Rokkaku-kei (hexagon) uses the number six. This logical structure allows you to identify shapes simply by counting their corners. You will also encounter the kanji for shape, 形, which is often read as "kei" in mathematical terms but can be read as "gata" for more descriptive forms. Examples include Hoshigata (star) or Hishigata (diamond).
Beyond standard geometry, the list covers common symbols and structural lines. You will encounter terms like Yajirushi (arrow), Mikazukikei (crescent), and Sen (line). There are even borrowed terms from English written in katakana, such as Hāto (heart) and Jiguzagu (zigzag). Mastering these words provides a strong foundation for descriptive Japanese, helping you specify the precise appearance and structure of objects in your daily surroundings.
