Learn Korean: Ingredients & Cooking
Mastering the vocabulary of the kitchen is an essential step for any learner interested in Korean culture, as food plays a central role in daily life and social gatherings. This lesson introduces the fundamental building blocks of Korean cuisine, from staple ingredients like cooked rice or bap (밥) and vegetables known as chae-so (채소), to the essential seasonings found in every pantry such as salt or so-geum (소금) and garlic or ma-neul (ma-neul). By learning these terms, you will be better equipped to follow a recipe (re-si-pi) or understand how your favorite dishes are prepared.
One useful pattern to notice is how different types of meat are named. The general word for meat is go-gi (고기). To specify the animal, Korean simply adds the name of the animal before the meat category. For example, beef is so-go-gi (소고기) and chicken is dak-go-gi (닭고기). Another interesting feature is the presence of loanwords that might sound familiar to English speakers, such as beo-teo (버터) for butter and peu-ra-i-paen (프라이팬) for frying pan. Understanding the verbs for cooking methods is also vital; actions like stir-frying or bok-da (볶다) and grilling or gup-da (굽다) are frequently used to describe how a meal is crafted, helping you grasp the texture and flavor or mat (맛) of what you are eating.
