Starting your journey in Korean begins with mastering the foundations of social interaction and self-introduction. This lesson introduces essential greetings like 안녕하세요 (An-nyeong-ha-se-yo) for hello and 반갑습니다 (Ban-gap-seum-ni-da) for nice to meet you. Learning these words allows you to navigate basic conversations about your identity, including your name (이름 - I-reum), job (직업 - Jig-eop), and where (어디 - Eo-di) you are from (에서 - E-seo). Understanding these terms is vital because Korean culture places a high value on politeness and social context when meeting someone for the first time.

One important language pattern to notice is how goodbye changes based on who is leaving. If the other person is departing, you say 안녕히 가세요 (An-nyeong-hi ga-se-yo), which literally means go well. If you are leaving and they are staying, you use 안녕히 계세요 (An-nyeong-hi gye-se-yo), meaning stay well. Additionally, you will practice the polite ending 입니다 (Im-ni-da), which translates to I am. Using this alongside the polite form of I, 저 (Jeo), helps you introduce yourself as a student (학생 - Hak-saeng) or a person (사람 - Sa-ram) from a specific country like Korea (한국 - Han-guk) or the UK (영국 - Yeong-guk).
