This lesson introduces the fundamental building blocks of Swahili, a language where polite social exchange is a cornerstone of daily life. You will learn essential greetings and social formulas that are crucial for building relationships, such as the standard greeting Habari (ha-ba-ree) and the polite response to a favor, Asante (ah-san-teh). Because Swahili culture places a high value on respect and community, knowing how to introduce yourself with Mimi ni (mee-mee nee) or ask for someone’s name with Jina lako nani? (jee-nah la-koh na-nee) is the first step toward meaningful communication with a new Rafiki (ra-fee-kee), or friend.

One useful language pattern to notice is how greetings often function as a call-and-response pair. For example, when someone asks Hujambo (hoo-jam-boh), which translates to "how are you," the standard reply is Sijambo (see-jam-boh), meaning "I am fine." You will also see how the language uses the word sana to add emphasis, as in Asante sana (ah-san-teh sa-na) for "thank you very much." Whether you are speaking with a Mwalimu (mwa-lee-moo) or a Mwanafunzi (mwa-na-foon-zee), these phrases help you navigate social interactions. If things are moving too fast, you can always ask your partner to speak Polepole (poh-leh-poh-leh), which means slowly, to ensure you can eventually say Naelewa (na-eh-leh-wa), or I understand.
