Learn Turkish: Numbers 1–20
Counting is one of the most practical skills you can acquire when starting your Turkish language journey. This lesson covers the essential numbers from one to twenty, providing the building blocks for handling money, telling time, and discussing quantities in everyday situations. Whether you are ordering Bir (beer) coffee or asking for Dört (duert) tickets, mastering these digits will significantly increase your confidence when navigating Turkish-speaking environments.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the Turkish numbering system is its extreme regularity and logic. To form the numbers from eleven to nineteen, you simply state the word for ten, which is On (ohn), followed by the single-digit number. For instance, eleven is On bir (ohn beer), thirteen is expressed as On üç (ohn ewch), and fifteen is On beş (ohn besh). This additive pattern continues throughout the entire numbering system, making it much more intuitive for English speakers than languages with irregular teen forms.
As you practice, pay close attention to the specific vowel sounds, such as the Ü in Üç (ewch) or the dotless I in Altı (ahl-tuh). By the time you reach the final number in this set, Yirmi (yeer-mee) for twenty, you will have established a strong phonetic foundation that allows you to count and combine numbers with ease.
